Translators Needed to Assist Haitian Evacuees

Dear Friend: Approximately 100 Haitian evacuees have arrived in Chicago in the past week and more are expected to come soon. Tony Raden, Deputy Commissioner at Chicago's Children and Youth Services, is compiling a list of people who speak French or Creole and who would be willing to act as translators. If you are able to help, please contact Commissioner Raden at araden@cityofchicago.org or 312/743-1976. Thank you. Sarah Schriber SCAC President

    SCAC Summer Traineeship Project

The Networking Committee is starting a new project to find summer traineeships for Smith students. Without a doubt, our young women have powerful intellects and drive. But, in this economy, they could use a boost from Smith's "Old Girl Network" to find summer positions that might result in permanent employment after graduation. Could your company hire an intern for eight weeks next summer? If this is a possibility, please contact Networking Chair Pat Gillman at pngillman@gmail.com. A paying position would be wonderful. However, Smith does fund some summer internships through its Praxis Program. We're also looking for volunteers to comb through the directory of Smith alums in the Chicago area, to make calls or send notes asking Smithies to consider raising the topic with their employers and generally to brainstorm on how we can most effectively locate summer positions. Whether you have a lot or a little time to give, we'd like your help.
